Fire Sign Tour
Iconic rappers Sampa The Great and hip-hop duo Remi (Remi and Sensible J) reunite for a joint national tour of Australia for release of Sensible J's latest cut 'Fire Sign'. All-African members unapologetically embrace there roots on the tour, painting the town Black.
"The collaboration of REMI and Sampa The Great is sacred", as they have collectively shifted the hip-hop scene in Australia. The track channels contemporary, traditional, funk and African vibes. This collaboration in music, with community and friendship on stage, requires a certain strength in representation and identity. An exciting challenge for me as a designer who also shares a love for hip hop and is of African descent. The promotional material needs to be loud and proud.
Tour promo design was inspired by the concept of Afrofuturism and vintage Nigerian Vinyl covers. Afro futurism with its roots in funk, represent an alternate reality that is vital when it comes to the celebration of blackness; which the tour evokes hence the glowing eyes. The colour was essential to the statement being made by the artists and all marks created needs to instantly identified African design or patterning prevalent in historic art, fashion, and ceramics across Sub-saharan Africa.
The treatment of the art and design varies across the of digital and print collateral. A0 posters were required as well as, digital material, motion graphics, and stage design in order design intensity. The 2 colour design, black and yellow, creates high contrast against the dim background that tour promotion is usually viewed in. The visuals must be created to suit its changing viewing environments.
